In the historical setting of the garden district of Eisden (Maasmechelen, Belgium), GARTENCITY #1 presents the collection of the Museum Het Domein (Sittard, NL). Apart from the 35-odd distinguished artists from this collection, other artists with a special connection to the art centre participate.

GARTENCITY #1 is a parallel Event of Manifesta 9. Manifesta, The European Biennial of Contemporary Art, takes place from June 2 until September 30, 2012 at the impressive site of the former Waterschei mine in Genk, Limburg, Belgium.

For the first time in the history of Manifesta, the biennial will not only present an international, industry-leading selection of contemporary art. The exhibition will also consist of an impressive collection of historical works and will display the rich mining heritage in a surprising and innovative way to both local and international audiences. Parallel events are collateral events taking place in the same period as Manifesta. This edition focuses on cultural projects being organised in the region of Belgian Limburg and neighbouring communities in Dutch Limburg, Germany and Wallonia.

Curator Cuauhtémoc Medina (Mexico City) developed the concept for Manifesta 9, addressing the social and societal impact of the recent past in Limburg.

'De kracht van Johan Tahon ligt in zijn koppige houding waarbij hij de sporen wil blijven laten zien van het gevecht dat vaak alleen - en altijd alleen ten volle - in het atelier van de kunstenaar zichtbaar en tastbaar is.' Dixit Jan Hoet, die kunstenaar Johan Tahon destijds ontdekte.

Meer dan dertig jaar later is er nu Universus, het boek bij de gelijknamige tentoonstelling in Oudenaarde, genoemd naar het beeld dat er al twintig jaar staat. Dat is ook het tijdsbestek dat Universus beslaat, want meer nog dan een catalogus is het ook het verhaal van de evolutie in Tahons beeldhouwkunst, van zijn plek in de kunstgeschiedenis én van de objecten die hij verzamelt.
